This was the first game I ever worked on. My first day as a game tester at Sega was spent on this very fun side-scroller. I ended up spending almost a month on Kid Chameleon, and I have the dubious distinction of being the first person (other than the developers of the game) to get all the way through the game.
The game is about a kid trapped in a holodeck, playing in a virtual world where the player can put on one of a number of different hats and become various things, such as a sword wielding Ninja, an ax throwing hockeymask wearer, a bug that can climb walls, or even a tank. It also had over a hundred levels, with several paths to the end of each game stage. I still have fun (on rare occasions) playing this game.
While we were testing the game, there were a couple of cheats
embedded in the game, but I think they were taken out in the final
version. However, I recently found this cheat on another webpage:
Skip to the Final Boss (Plethora Level): Go to the
end of the Blue Lake Woods 2 level, but do not touch the flag.
Stand on the last prize block, hold the Jump and Special
Weapons buttons, then press Down/Right. Off you go!
You can find a complete map of ALL the levels and how they connect
below. A square box is a main game level, a small rectangular
box is a little side level, and the diamond shaped boxes are the
boss levels. A solid arrow between boxes shows the main path (finding
the flag at the end of the level). A dashed arrow is a teleporter
to another level.
