This is a photo of Temple II from the north side. As most Mayan temples, this structure was built over the remains of previous temples. One of these ancestors of the final temple had two huge stucco masks flanking the staircase, which is where the temple's name, "Temple of the Masks" came from. It is the smaller of the two central pyramids of Tikal. The steps in the foreground lead up into the North Acropolis.
